What is Information Technology?
Information Technology refers to the collection of products and services that turn data into useful, meaningful and accessible information. The IT industry has several major facets: computer hardware, software and services. Often Telecommunications software and services are also included in the definition. Given the convergence of this technology, including the Internet, hand held devices, intelligent machines and other equipment, clear distinctions between “information technology” and “telecommunications” are exceedingly difficult.
The IT industry is one of the fastest growing segments of the Nigerian economy. The industry has opened up tremendous opportunities for the promotion of trade and services contributing to the nation’s economic growth in many important ways in recent years.
While the IT industry has its legacy firmly planted in mainframe computers and software, its future appears to be in mobility platforms, peer-to-peer networks, content rich broadband applications, intelligent devices and more. Meanwhile, common standards for computer networking allowed for the integration of disparate computational devices with the Internet protocol triggering a worldwide communications and knowledge-sharing phenomenon.
With the integration of computer hardware, software and communications into real-time applications found at home and at work, information sharing would no doubt continue far into the future.
This revelation, society’s next frontier, makes information technology the most exciting and creative industry of the 21st century.
The industry is not without its casualties, however, and companies that fail to adjust to market or technology shifts, or lacking a unique value such as industry specialization, are often forced into bankruptcy or mergers of desperation.
While economic and political climates may alter the flow of technology spending, companies will continue to spend money to install and maintain the hardware and software nearly every business depends upon. As long as computers exist, so too will companies devoted to servicing them
